Virginia Sonntag-O’Brien has nearly 30 years’ international experience in the areas of energy and climate change at the interface between policy and finance, also at city level. Her work has focused on establishing and supporting linkages between the financial community, sustainable energy businesses, and policymakers to enable investment in renewable energy and energy efficiency projects and enterprises.
She has held a number of senior leadership roles, including Executive Secretary of REN21 – the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century, Co-coordinator of UN Environment’s Sustainable Energy Finance Initiative (SEFI), which in collaboration with New Energy Finance (now Bloomberg New Energy Finance) launched the annual report Global Trends in Renewable Energy Investment. She served as Managing Director of BASE – Basel Agency for Sustainable Energy, and as European Director of the Cities for Climate Protection campaign sponsored by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability.
She has served on a number of boards and expert committees. She is a member of the Board of Trustees of the European Environment Foundation, is a founding member of the CO2-Abgabe e.V. – a German NGO advocating for a levy on CO2 emissions, and was co-founder of the CDM Gold Standard Foundation.
