Dr. Kathrin Goldammer

Managing Director, Reiner Lemoine Institute

    Dr. Kathrin Goldammer is an energy market expert with a special interest in energy policy, stakeholder involvement in politics and transdisciplinary approaches to knowledge generation.

    Kathrin Goldammer studied Electrical Engineering at Technical University of Berlin and received her PhD in Physics after research periods in Switzerland, the USA and Japan. After that, she started her career in the energy industry managing the German electricity generation portfolio for a Swiss utility company. From there she switched to consulting and was in charge of asset management and portfolio optimization projects for utilities and the industry. In 2012 she switched to the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies, a sustainability and transdisciplinarity think-tank in Potsdam, and established the Transdiscipilinary Panel on Energy Change. The Panel proposed energy policies ranging as far as from renewable energy incentive schemes to conventional power plant standards and conducted analyses on the sociological aspects of the energy system transformation. From IASS she transferred to the German Academy of Science and Engineering where she was in charge of the Energiewende Research Forum, the multi-stakeholder dialogue platform of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. In 2016 she became managing director at the Reiner Lemoine Institute. The Reiner Lemoine Institute is an applied energy research institute in Berlin that conducts research on battery-electric and fuel-cell vehicles, off-grid electrification schemes with renewable energies and computer-based energy system modelling.

    Work experience:

    Since 02/2016 Managing Director at Reiner Lemoine Institute, Berlin. In charge of institute’s strategy, science agenda and finance & administration. Managing 25 FTEs plus students with a budget of 2 million € p.a. and mostly third-party funding (public and private). Currently working mostly on electric vehicles and fuel cells in the transportation sector.

    From 10/2013 to 01/2016 Head of the Energiewende Research Forum Office for the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, based at acatech – the German National Academy of Science and Engineering in Berlin. Managed 8 FTEs, reported directly to state secretary and moderated the ministry’s energy research stakeholder dialogue.
    From 03/2012 until the start of the Energiewende Research Forum project leader at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies e.V., IASS, in Potsdam. Managed 10 FTEs, made contributions to German and European Union energy policy agenda and established myself as energy speaker.

    10/2010 to 05/2012 Head of Real Options at KoM-SOLUTION Management Consulting firm. Managed 3 FTEs in competitive consulting environment, clients mostly in the utilities and renewable energy business.

    01/2008 to 08/2010 Asset Optimizer and Originator for the Alpiq Energie Deutschland AG

    (formerly Atel Energie AG), a Swiss utility company. Worked as quantitative analyst, portfolio manager, risk manager and power plant manager on several European and international commodity markets (mainly gas, coal, electricity, carbon).

    10/2004 to 12/2007 Scientist at the Berliner Elektronenspeicherring Gesellschaft für Synchrotronstrahlung (BESSY), today called Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie. Free Electron Laser and beam physics research.
